Batman #665

the truth behind what happened in 52-- the story of what bruce went through in the cave in isolation. . . what happened?

It's revealed in 665 but I dont trust Morrison, I know he had a direct hand in this as he writes both Batman and 52 but I dislike the direction he's going in.

Anyone else feel the same way or am I alone?

I think Bats is better left alone and not broken down. Morrison is going into the Joe Cool shit and that is ridiculous. . . or maybe I'm wrong. . . . .

D.C.U. has gotten so clean that Bats should just find his place and stay== stop sending him into space and elsewhere he belongs in gotham. If JLA needs Tactical info, course of action etc. that's one thing but c'mon. He's my fav character but dont stretch it . . . I love and hate Grant Morrison's run.

I'm really liking these. Let's keep 'em going.

Alright, Batman vs. Darth Vader, who would win. Remember, no prep, just battle.

This one is really close, I think. Batman could avoid almost anything Darth threw at him, I think, but could he get past that light saber? Ah, but Darth has the Force, and that's sort of a trump card, isn't it? I guess I've got to go with Vader.

For the first writer who resuscitated the Dark Knight from irrelevance - almost 20 years before Frank Miller's "Dark Knight" returned::

http://www.fortunecity.com/tatooine/niven/142/talentpo/tp19.html

Hes' also started to write some DC Universe novels, most of which feature Batman in supporting roles behind other heroes. "Hero's Quest" is a wacky "origin story" involving GL Kyle Rayner, whereas "Helltown" is a first adventure for The Question.

Hi ya'll,
I just remembered about seeing this real life local "super-hero" and since I'm in kinda nostalgic holiday mood thought I'd post it. He was only famous locally; but was a legend to those of us who lived here. Saw him many times riding the freeway in his "Batmobile"; and just as many changing tires for people or bringing a can of gas to motorists who were stranded...He wasn't rich like Bruce Wayne; but I think he truly captured the spirit of helping others. Happy holidays!!

Jim Carry would play the Ultimate Joker for the next Batman film

Before you ask is this really going to happen? The answer is no, this is more of my thoughts on the next Batman movie simply because I watched Batman forever a dozen times and when you watch Jim Carry joke around with his sissly personality that he uses in every movie regardless of what character he is portraying you would think "hmm he did really well as the Riddler but we need him to deffinatly play as Joker!" If anyone watches the cartoon of batman not that stupid "The Batman" but the original Batman cartoons that use to come on the WB in the late 90's then they transfered it over to "Boomerrang" the channel where all the classic cartoons like the Flintstones, Tom and jerry, and etc comes on. I loved Batman Beyond it was a great show even though it was completly different and new they only did one series (What a shame).

Either way, the next movie about Batman should use Joker and someone please try to get Jim Carry to do this role! He would extremelly PERFECT for it. Tommy Lee Jones or whatever his name is that played as Two Face in Batman forever was good. I forgot who played as Joker in the very first Batman movie but he was horrible, at least he had the look and the grin though.

Hi guys!
any thoughts on the just finished "Batman and the Monster Men" and the ongoing "Batman and the Mad Monk"? I got to read the original Bob Kane stories in the Batman Archives reprints and I thought they were awesome, very intense and grim. Whereas I'm not the biggest fan of Wagner's drawing, his storytelling is remarkable, and Julie Madison is gonna make it on the very elitist list of Batman's girlfriends that are not completely forgettable/ hateable. As I said, any thoughts out there?

Well, I just finished Batman: City of Crime and Batman: Face the Face trades. CoC was AWESOME. FtF took place in the 1year later timeline, and was great in a character development sense, but not so strong in a 'who's the bad guy' sense. And where the hell is the Black Mask?

I sprung the extra money and ordered the special edition of this fine film that included two miniatures of Bats & Drac.

Totally worth the wait & the money. The Batman figure is the coolest thing since Porn, and the Dracula figure is all vamped out and ugly.

And in case you haven't seen the movie; well, it's shithot.

Go and buy your's today!

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Superheroes

Deepak Chopra and Grant Morrison explore the social subconscious.

Thursday at the San Diego Comic-Con brought an intriguing collaboration. Grant Morrison and Deepak Chopra, having met for the first time the previous night, had a discussion about the role superheroes play in the social fabric.

A superhero is "symbolic expression of the social subconscious," according to Chopra. "The superhero is a mythological being" who exists "beyond outerspace and innerspace, creating a new idea of being."

Even deconstructing superheroes, a '90s movement fronted by the likes of Morrison, "comes from fear," according to the comics writer. "People are scared to be hopeful." And though writers and society pummeled Superman, he persevered and the core character survived for the new era of comics just now emerging.

Chopra suggested that the seven spiritual laws could mirror the seven chakras. "A Chakra is a junction point between consciousness and reality," Chopra explained before leading the audience through all seven.

"First chakra - Stability. Infinite centered awareness and dynamism.
Second chakra - Transformation. An absolute allegiance to transformation. Willingness not to have a permanent identity
Third - Power. Not in the sense of muscle, but in intention.
Fourth -- Love and compassion. Nothing better it is integrated with the rest of the Chakras.
Fifth - Creativity. Always creative solutions.
Sixth - Intuition.
Seventh - Transcendence."

The seven chakras can also be linked to the idea of seven gods, a theme that clearly parallels the seven main characters of the JLA.

"Look at the JLA," Morrison said. "They all map on the chakras. Batman is a human being of ultimate power [and intention.] Flash is communication. Superman is about giving selflessly He represents the sun. He is that thing that loves us unconditionally."

He added later that "Batman is like Christ harrowing Hell, because only he can withstand it. He endures everything for us. Batman is a character who was almost brought to the brink of his destruction," but who persevered. Batman is our shadow and "we have to look at the shadow and integrate the shadow [into our consciousness]."

And "yeah," Morrison admitted, Seven soldiers is an allegory to seven gods. "Mr. Miracle is the transcendent character," the seventh Chakra.

Superheroes are our new mythology. They are not so different from the Greek Gods, who were not as deeply seeded in religion as some may think. But what is mythology on a deeper level?

As Deepak Chopra asserts, a mythology "must address the collective consciousness in a certain archetypal way. It must offer an idealist vision to aspire [towards]." He added that, "a good story should never end and good guys should never win."

"There are six plots that people retell," Morrison said. "These stories are told again and again."

Myth is related to the word mother. As Chopra called it, "the womb of creation." Myth is not just hokey stories that explain why the sun rises and falls. That's a very simplistic view. To put it poetically, myths are where "we express our deepest longing and aspirations of collective being." Myth is a social experience beyond genetic codes or organized religions.

"The human story is about a quest, falling down, but getting up again," Chopra said. "Death and rebirth. It's about redeeming yourself and then redeeming others."

Our existence is still young in the eyes of the universe. "In many ways," Chopra said, "we are reaching puberty. There's a lot of curiosity, mistakes, risk-taking. But it is an exciting time." One full of possibilities, though there are certain to be some growing pains.

Chopra proposed that our current destructive nature may not mean the end of human existence. In fact, it could be part of the natural order of evolution. "The are no fossil records of the evolutionary transition between lizard and bird." It happened, but we have no true proof, just as we cannot find the missing link between ape and man. Chopra suggested that it is possible a species can experience a "creative quantum leap."

Think of a caterpillar. "A caterpillar consumes more than it needs to eat until it reaches a point where its body begins to decay and die. Imaginal cells cluster. The send communications to each other. The caterpillar is imagining a new entity. [The imaginal cells] use the dying carcass of the caterpillar to feed. A dormant gene awakens and the dying caterpillar becomes a butterfly, a completely new creature."

Now consider that "cloning, tinkering with the intelligence of the universe," are "ideas that existed in ancient mythologies." Yesterday's mythologies are today's science.

So think of our modern myths. Think of the superhero. "Look at destruction of environment," Morrison said. Look at what has become of our world and our society. "We are the imaginal cells."

Chopra put it plainly. "Superheroes may be a prelude to an actual leap in our evolution," as our social conscious has the knowledge of the possibility of flight and other incredible, superhuman feats.

New 'Batman' names its Joker
Heath Ledger to take on role of criminal mastermind

Tuesday, August 1, 2006; Posted: 9:17 a.m. EDT (13:17 GMT)
LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Batman is heading into a sequel, titled "The Dark Knight," and he will face off against the Joker, this time played by Heath Ledger.

Christian Bale, the star of last year's "Batman Begins," will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Christopher Nolan is returning to the directing chair.

Ledger, Oscar-nominated this year for his role in "Brokeback Mountain," resurrects a murderous role memorably played in 1989 by Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's "Batman."

"Batman Begins" was a critical and commercial hit, and relaunched the Warner Bros. franchise.

An early 2007 start date is being eyed for the sequel. Before then, Bale and Nolan will be in theaters this fall with the Disney release "The Prestige."

I've done several of these before, but my latest endeavour is http://batmantrades.com. This is my attempt at a complete list of Batman trades in their most appropriate continuity-centric reading-order. It's still in progress. I haven't tackled most of the Elseworlds books yet (which would include Dark Knight Returns), but I think I've got most of the in-continuity books done, which is the main point of the site anyway.

Let me know if you see anything that seems particularly out-of-order. And if you find the site useful, bookmark it and share it with your friends. I'll be keeping it as current as possible since starting with One Year Later, I'll be buying pretty much every new DC trade that's published. Enjoy.

The Return of Kathy Kane

Batwoman hero returns as lesbian

Comic book heroine Batwoman is to make a comeback as a "lipstick lesbian" who moonlights as a crime fighter, a DC Comics spokesman has confirmed.

Batwoman - real name Kathy Kane - will appear in 52, a year-long DC Comics publication that began this month.

In her latest incarnation, she is a rich socialite who has a romantic history with another 52 character, ex-police detective Renee Montoya.

52 will be published in the UK as a graphic novel by Titan Books in 2007.

The series is set in a world in which established superheroes Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman do not play a part.

Reinvention

The new-look Batwoman is just one of a wave of ethnically and sexually diverse characters entering the DC Comics universe.

Others include Mexican teenager Blue Beetle - who replaces the character's previous white incarnation - and the Great Ten, a government-sponsored team of Chinese superheroes.

Regular characters Firestorm and The Atom, meanwhile, have been reinvented as black and Asian heroes respectively.

The characters are part of a wider effort to broaden the make-up of comic-book creations in line with society as a whole.

Batwoman, who first appeared in July 1956, has not been seen since September 1979 when she was killed by the League of Assassins and the Bronze Tiger.

Art Controversy Involving Batman Exhibit Stirs Up Controversy

GAY BATMAN" ARTIST GETS "CEASE & DESIST"
D.C. Comics has hit a Chelsea art dealer with a "cease & desist" letter for exhibiting Mark Chamberlain’s watercolors on a "gay Batman" theme. The works, which were exhibited at Kathleen Cullen Fine Art this spring (where they found ready buyers at prices starting at $200), include images of Batman and Robin exchanging a kiss, a watercolor titled Robin’s Baby Pictures depicting the Boy Wonder’s cute rear end, and a rendering of the Caped Crusader, sans shirt but otherwise in costume, striking a languorous pose. "D.C. Comics wants me to hand over all unsold work and invoices for the sold work," exclaimed dealer Kathleen Cullen (the gallery was formerly named Artek Contemporaries). "I’ve spent the last two weeks of my life consulting lawyers!" (Some works are also posted on Artnet, which has received a similar letter.)

The use by fine artists of mass-market and commercial cartoon imagery goes back decades -- both Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol were pursued by photographers for copyright violations (the artists tended to settle), and Jeff Koons famously litigated the String of Puppies case all the way to the Supreme Court (he lost). The Walt Disney Co. brought an infringement suit against Dennis Oppenheim for using small statuettes of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck in his sculpture Virus, with mixed results -- the artist was forbidden to sell the work but allowed to exhibit it. Karen Finley’s 1999 book, Pooh Unplugged, a rather scatological version of the children’s classic, forestalled a similar lawsuit by labeling the publication "a parody" on its cover. The issue is a hot one -- more recently, artists including Tom Sachs and Damien Loeb have been touched by copyright (and trademark) disputes. Stay tuned.

For all of you that have been disgusted with the cheapo dvd you already have, this one is quite amazing. As much as I like Batman Begins, they did a really good job with this set. A feature long commentary with Tim Burton, a wonderful transfer and an "Extras" dvd that is LOADED with extra material...well worth the money!

hey I just found this guys post on IMDB for the next Batman movie.....this is what he hopes for in the next one (and it sounds badass) what are you hopes?

I thought I just throw out my ideas of what the story could be for the sequel to Batman Begins.

It's pretty clear by the end of Begins that Batman and Gordon have struck up an alliance to bring order to the streets of Gotham, and like everyone else I speculate that with DA Finch's death, Harvey Dent will be brought in to replace him. Dent, Gordon and Bats will prove to be a formidable force, successfully taking down crime as team, that is until they find a joker in the deck.

I'm speculating that Gordon's speech on escalation will become reality, as Sal Maroni begins to make a move on Falcone's territory, enlisting a British Arms Dealer, nicknamed The Penguin to supply him with the guns to do so, causing a large crime wave, where any "Joe Chill" can get his hands on an automatic weapon. Then there's Roman Sionis, Bruce's mirror image, who ends up running his company to the ground, resorting to organized crime to make ends meet. As his company has hit rock bottom, he enlists former Wayne Enterprises CEO, Robert Earle to try to rebuild his company. Together they find that they both have a common hatred of Bruce Wayne, and together attempt to attack his image. Meanwhile Roman has taken on the persona of The Black Mask in the crime world, and gets involved in a gang war with Salvatore Maroni. The dream team of Gordon, Dent and Bats are already exhausted from trying to take down the escalation in the streets that they begin to fall apart. Gordon begins to have an affair with fellow cop, Sarah Essen, Dent begins to become more aggresive, making Gordon and Batman begin to become aware that Harvey may have a big, bad side. Batman would be suffering the worse as he is suffering attacks on all personas. This causes Batman to become sloppy and he soon finds that as he begins to hunt monsters, he is becoming a monster himself. And if that isn't bad enough, a mysterious figure named the Joker, with an obession for Batman, begins to cause havoc for everyone. This man has no method or reason, he kill because he likes to and he finds it funny. All this causes Batman to push himself to his limits, and to his breaking point.

I know there's been a bunch of posts like this talking about what the plot will be, but I think I've pieced all the clues and rumors together into something that may actually be close to what we may see. But who knows, Goyer and Nolan may have something completely different in mind. We'll just have wait a couple more years to find out.

Man, I guess they're rolling out all of the Batman stuff now! I went to the store the other day to check out Batman Begins and the special edition of the 1989 Batman and they also had the old Batman serial from 1943, which I just had to buy! I already had the Batman & Robin serials from 1949. Has anyone else seen these? They're so fun to watch; the effects and costumes definitely aren't as sophisticated as what has been accomplished lately, but neither is the script or the acting....you'd have to watch this with the thought in mind that this was done in the forties when people were more entertained by big dramatics and big action instead of more introverted "motivations". It's just as fun to watch as the sixties TV series.

Batman (1943)--Starring Lewis Wilson as Batman and Douglas Croft as Robin, highlights the daring adventures of the Dynamic Duo as they fight crime in Gotham City and try to find out who the ring leader is behind this recent rash of violent activities. It turns out the the diabolical fiend rousing up these criminals is Dr. Tito Daka, a Japanese agent sent from the Land of the Rising Sun to help the government of his homeland conquer the United States and win WWII.

Batman & Robin (1949)--Batman and Robin are called upon once again to protect Gotham, this time against the evil Wizard, who is seemingly invincible once his thugs have stolen a newly patented remote control machine. This time Robert Lowery plays the Caped Crusader and John Duncan is the Boy Wonder.

10/24 Happy Birthday Bob Kane

Bob Kane (October 24, 1915 – November 3, 1998) was the co-creator of Batman, although many sources credit Kane as the sole creator of the character.
He was born Robert Kahn but legally changed his name to the familiar "Kane" at age 18. An eager young artist, Kane came to the burgeoning comics world in 1936 with his own book that led to various assignments in the following years. Following the success of Superman in Action Comics, editors at National Publications (now DC Comics) requested more superheroes comics. In response, Kane created a character called "Birdman". His collaborator Bill Finger offered such suggestions as renaming the character "Batman", giving the character a cowl instead of a simple domino mask, giving him a cape instead of wings, giving him gloves, and removing bright red sections of the original costume. Finger wrote the first Batman story, while Kane provided art. Because Kane had already submitted the proposal for a Batman character to his editors at DC Comics, Kane was the only person given official credit at the time for the creation of Batman.
The character was a breakout hit, but National sought to improve sales even further. Editors suggested that the character receive a youthful sidekick who the readers could use as an audience surrogate. Kane initially suggested an impish character like Puck, while Finger suggested a more down-to-earth character, Robin.
Kane, the more business-savvy of the Kane-Finger creative team, negotiated a contract with National, signing away any ownership that he might have in the character in exchange for, among other compensations, a mandatory byline on all Batman comics stating "Batman created by Bob Kane", regardless of whether he was involved in the specific issue. Bill Finger's contract, by comparison, left him with a monetary pittance and no credit even on the stories that he wrote without Kane.
Kane's major contributions to Batman were in the 1940s, with several "ghost pencilers" assisting him (like Jerry Robinson, who co-created the "Joker" while working under Kane's name). As his comic work tapered off later in his career, Kane parlayed his official status as sole creator of Batman into a low level of celebrity. He enjoyed a post-comic book career as a painter, showing his work in art galleries. Even some of these paintings were produced by other, uncredited artists, now ghost-painting under Kane's name. Kane died in 1998 and was interred in Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles.

Trivia
Kane also created the television cartoon characters Courageous Cat, Minute Mouse and Cool McCool.
Created the comic superhero Batman in May 1939.
He created Batman from a combination of Zorro (a wealthy playboy/masked hero), the Shadow (a dark superhero), and Dracula (a bat-like creature).
The name 'Bruce Wayne' is derived from Scottish history's Robert the Bruce and Revolutionary War General "Mad" Anthony Wayne.
Stated in "Cinescape" magazine that of all the actors who played Batman, he felt that Val Kilmer did it the best.
His famous comic book character 'Batman' made his debut in Detective Comics # 27 in May 1939. It is now a collector's classic and a near mint comic book can fetch upto $ 350,000 (in 2003).
Personally recommended Jack Nicholson for the role of the Joker in the original Batman (1989).
In 1939 he was a freelance artist with a small studio of artists to assist/ghost pencil his work. Among these young comic creators was the writer of the group, Bill Finger. They were hired by Kane, not National and all work to come out of the studio was credited to Bob Kane. When National Comics (eventually DC Comics) editor Vin Sullivan asked him to create the next "Superman", he created a hero called "Birdman". Birdman wore a red outfit with domino mask and wings. It was the suggestion of Finger to make him a "Batman" and to make his costume dark, with a bat cowl and cape. He wrote the first Batman comic and many more. Without Bill Finger there would be no Batman. Yet he died poor and uncredited. Years later Kane expressed regret over this, yet he never allowed Finger to be credited as a co-creator.
Gave Adam West, who portrayed Batman on the 1960s TV series, a drawing of Batman with the inscription "To my buddy Adam, who breathed life into my pen and ink creation."
When signing a print of Batman and Robin in flight for an old friend, signed it "Bats Wishes Always".

This is why he's the coolest superhero ...

Warren Ellis has started a storyline in issue 10 of the "Justice League of America: Classified" book ... entitled "New Maps of Hell."

This guy really knows how to introduce various heroes in good ways. Superman and Wonder Woman both appear in this story, dealing with what they think are unrelated crises in Metropolis and Themyscera, but of course they're not unrelated...to each other, or to a murder mystery taking shape in Gotham City.

So this guy takes a swan dive off of a tall building in Metropolis. Clark Kent and his lovely wife/colleague, Lois Lane, turn up to needle the cops and snoop about. They banter with each other and with Perry White, back at the Daily Planet. It's all very Nick and Nora, Thirties musical comedy, really cute ... and such a drag.

The scene switches to Gotham.
It's raining.
A lot.
A huge, dark, imposing mansion on a hill, set outside the city limits, is briefly lit up by the Bat-signal.
Bruce Wayne, brooding, alone, gloomy, sees the signal and heads downstairs.
He communicates in short, blunt sentences with the Gotham P.D. He is far from friendly - "Tell me why this is worthy of my time?" All the while they're answering him, he's putting on his work clothes: he pulls his tunic over a back tattooed with many, many scars of battle.
Clark and Lois tease eacvh other and act all lovey-dovey, but can't crack the case.
The Batmobile drives through slashing rain...he sneaks into a building...he tasers two guards and hacks into a computer...and he's already halfway to solving the mystery.
Wonder Woman greets some academics (all female, of course) at Themyscera.
There's an explosion.
To be continued....

Can't wait for issue #11!

I'm so dumb. I just read in EW that Cillian Murphy is the curly-haired fella in 28 Days Later, which I loved. I didn't notice his murpled his lips before, what with all the vomiting zombies.

From EW:
<<His Favorite Scarecrow: Well, it's not the one you'd think. "My favorite film is Scarecrow, which is this 1973 movie withAl Pacino and Gene Hackman, at the height of their game. So whenever people ask me, 'What is your favorite movie?' I go, 'Oh, Scarecrow.' They think I'm prophesizing the spin-off of Batman Begins or something!'">>

Also in EW:

<<Batman Begins hints that the Joker will be the sequel's public enemy No. 1. Should director Christopher Nolan go for it or leave Tim Burton's 1989 evil-carnival vision alone?

TIM STACK SAYS GO: "Excellent spunk, Nolan. Reinventing the Joker is daunting, but you can do it. Forget Jack Nicholson. Enter new territory with someone edgy and talented -- maybe Peter Sarsgaard or Guy Pearce. But keep it real: no purple clown costume or bright green hair."

WHITNEY PASTOREK SAYS NO: "No one who ever owned Batman Jams wants Nicholoson's iconic Joker to become irrelevant. With his dagger-faced smile and toy-shop panache, he'll forever rule as the Clown Prince of Crime. Wanna dance with the devil in the pale moonlight? That's why DVD exists." >>

Well... my opinion: The Joker as a character is much more terrifying than The Clown Prince of Crime. He's evil and terrifying. Nicholson was enjoyable, but he didn't embody evil. He was no Killing Joke. I say "go," and I say, "wtf is batman jams." The pic of Nicholson is such that ... well, he's Jack, he's not Joker. That's my two cents.

JIM LEE ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN

JIM LEE ON ALL STAR BATMAN
With July’s All-Star Batman and Robin from DC, Jim Lee makes his return to Gotham City and the bat-mythology…but does he? Already having tackled the Dark Knight in the monster-selling Batman: Hush storyline, written by Jeph Loeb, Lee moved to (and is currently finishing) “For Tomorrow,” a 12-part storyline in Superman, written by Brian Azarello.

Why the return? What’s the deal with the “All-Star” line anyway, and what does he think about working with Frank Miller as his writer? We sat down with Lee for a chat about what will surely be one of the major comic book events of 2005.

Newsarama: First off, what made you decide to come back to Batman, as a character? Given the nature of the “Hush” storyline, one could come away with the idea that you’d said what you had to say about the character, given that you drew…everyone and their brothers in regards to Batman’s world.

Jim Lee: Well I don’t think you ever need an excuse to work on Batman who is arguably the greatest character of the modern age. That being said, there are a ton of other DCU characters we haven’t seen Batman interact with and if we do half the stuff Frank told me he had planned, I think fans have no worry in feeling any sense of déjà vu. Expect a lot of superpowered gals to be popping up as well as other half-cocked vigilante types.

NRAMA: With that in mind, I’d imagine that you’re not viewing this strictly as a “return to Batman,” then?

JL: I think we’re having our cake and eating it too. It’s a fresh start to the classic mythos; civilians and casual readers will dig it immediately and long time fans will love the new nuggets and gems Frank unearths as he takes on the Dark Knight once more. It’s the Batman we all know and love, seen with a contemporary point of view. That’s my answer and I’m sticking by it! [laughs].

NRAMA: Speaking of that “All-Star” angle…can you describe the setting a little more? It’s Gotham, Batman/Bruce, Robin/Dick, but not the ones that are currently in the DCU…or are they? Or is that too much thought into it already?

JL: It’s all of the above. It might be best to look at it as “Batman: Year Two” in the Millerverse of Batman. I assume it will feed off what Frank set up with Year One years ago and set up themes which will resonate with those seen in Dark Knight Returns and Dark Knight Strikes Again. It’s a fresh examination of the complex relationship between Batman and Robin, Wayne and Grayson.

NRAMA: From your view, as both the artist on the series, and a DC Vice President, who’s this line aimed at? Current readers? Non-DC readers? Non comic readers?

JL: All of the above.

One of my concerns as an artist in going back to tackle Batman once again was repeating myself. I think Batman and Robin will let me approach the Batman mythos with a fresh new take, simply by virtue of working with a visionary like Frank. As a VP, I would say the line is aimed squarely at casual readers. Browsers who have never read a Batman comic but are familiar with the character from other media should be able to pick up Batman and Robin: All Stars and get ‘it’ right from the start. We have a big opportunity this year with the behemoth that is Batman Begins launching in June and all the mainstream press and attention comics have been enjoying of late. The All-Star line should be ready to capitalize on the eventual interest. Frank also promises some very visceral, in your face storytelling and action with several twists and turns to the classic Batman and Robin mythology so I think long time fans will be pleasantly rewarded as well.

NRAMA: With that VP hat on then, if this is aimed at non-comic, or casual readers, why approach it in this way, as a monthly series in the Direct Market, rather than as a complete story that would go to bookstores concurrently with the DM, and, thus, a wider non-comic, or causal reading audience?

JL: I think it will do that, in collected form, possibly sooner than usual. I don’t run that part of the business so I can only guess but I think all rules are out the window this year with the Batman Begins launch. Given my schedule and speed, I think it would be wiser to get this title out to coincide with the release of the movie than commit to an original graphic novel which may not be ready to go to press ‘til December of this year. It’s a bit about timing, a bit about preserving the monthly comic format and a bit of capturing sales periodically and also later in collected format. Again, this is all supposition as I don’t work in marketing or collected editions.

NRAMA: As you’ve been saying, Batman Begins will have an impact on DC’s publishing schedule for 2005. The movie opens in June, and Batman and Robin hits in July. Is that a slipped date, or something designed to keep the Batman buzz going after the flick?

JL: This is all by design. We have known about the scheduling for the movie for some time. Moreover, a lot of this kind of activity has to be planned way in advance given the size and scope of the marketing involved in a tentpole movie like Batman Begins. We want Batman and Robin to be there when Batman fans are hungry for more Batman.

NRAMA: Okay – taking off that VP hat and getting back to the comic - boiling it down, from your point of view, in this setting, you’re freed from complaints/comments of: “Dick never wore a long-legged costume!” (as seen in the Wizard promotional art) right? What other lines have been either…erased or pushed far back to give you and Frank more room?

JL: The costumes seen in Wizard are unlikely to be seen in the first arc Frank and I do. The 10 or so designs I did for Batman and Robin will eventually show up but my understanding is that Batman and Robin starts out in as classic a style as possible. Can’t really say more than that without giving away stuff so there you have it. Remember this is an ongoing monthly so there will be changes and evolution of the characters as the series progresses.

NRAMA: Fair enough. Speaking of your esteemed writer for a moment or two…what was your reaction when you first found out about Frank joining? Like a lot of other creators your age, you kind of grew up looking at Frank’s stuff, right?

JL: Years ago after DC purchased WildStorm, when I was approached by Denny O’Neil of the Bat office to do something Batman related, I was asked who I wanted to work with and of course, Frank was the first answer. It took some incredible circumstances and many years but the patience will be worth it. In fact, I think I can do an infinitely better job of tackling a Frank Miller script now than say, six years ago. This is the project I have been training for for my entire professional career, if not my entire fan career.

I was a huge Miller fan back on his original Daredevil run and it just snowballed from there like it did for 95% of the fans out there. His work was always so inventive, his characters so emotionally conflicted and torn, and his storytelling was to die for. Who can forget the pathos and respectability he brought to once laughable characters like the Kingpin? The X-Men were my favorite characters but Frank Miller was the creator I admired most, the creator who kept rewriting the rules and astonishing everyone along the way.

NRAMA: That said, do you feel any kind of pressure, given that one of your artistic, and creative idols is writing a story for you, and figuratively, looking over your shoulder, or have you been able to let that part of it go, and just have fun?

JL: Hell yeah—it’s intimidating as s---. Knowing that Frank is an incredible storytelling and artist with strongly defined takes on his characters…of course, it goes without saying that second guessing is gonna try and creep in there. But I completely up for the challenge. I may have wilted 10 years ago, but I think my years of experience will carry me through on this one. In fact, I look forward to the pressure cooker; I feed off of the pressure.

In fact, every single artist who has worked with Frank has emerged a better artist, a better storyteller, a better writer for the experience and I can’t say how much anxious I am - in a good way - to have everything I know be torn apart and rebuilt from the ground up. This is how I have fun on a project, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

NRAMA: In that vein, is there a difference in working with someone who is as accomplished an artist as Frank is, compared to For Tomorrow and Hush? Are you and Frank speaking in something of a …different manner than you were with Jeph [Loeb] and Brian [Azzarello]?

JL: Well, I think Jeph is great at ‘seeing’ and describing a scene without necessarily being able to draw it and Brian has an art degree and background. But there is a big difference between them in that I think Jeph writes stories more like screenplays and Brian more like plays. I respond to their ‘images’ through their written word.

With Frank, we can talk just in visuals. When he describes scenes, I can see or rather imagine how it would look if he were to draw it and then decide whether to play to that or go off in a different direction visually. But the challenge will remain the same which is to capture through the art, the emotion and tension in the story and that applies equally to all three writers.

NRAMA: So far, how has the process been? Is Frank making art suggestions, or is he just giving you the straight script, and letting you take it from there?

JL: We talked some visual reference at the start. What does Gotham look like…the architecture and skyline but most of the discussion has been about how Robin perceives the world of Batman. How does a 14 year-old understand and deal with the world of Gotham, a world dominated by Batman.

NRAMA: So – the looks of Batman and Robin that we’ve seen in the preview images…those are upcoming designs? What elements and influences went into their look?

JL: As I said, I think they will be eventually seen, but we begin with the classic look for most of the main characters. As far as the designs, I had a lot of input from people at DC as well as some key suggestions from Alex Ross. In my mind, the original costumes are near perfect so it was a daunting task trying to update and customize the designs.

NRAMA: Likewise with the All-Star Batman’s “world” – have you been given a free hand to redesign characters, and other elements? Given that Frank has said the story will have loads of DCU characters in it, are you going to be going nuts on the costume tweaks there as well?

JL: I think it will be as classic as can be with more tweaking as we go further down the icon list. Those C and D-list heroes can expect more drastic makeovers but when it comes to characters like Black Canary—it’s got to be a short leather jacket and fishnets all the way. I will be getting to draw the characters with the maximum amount of creative freedom but 90% of the time, I will be defaulting to their original, classic look.

NRAMA: So – you had a chance to draw the movie version of the Batmobile for this year’s DC holiday card. Given the proximity of the movie to the comic, not to mention the design elements the movie Batmobile took from Frank’s designs in Dark Knight Returns in the first place…what’s the car going to look like?

JL: Good question – but I haven’t tackled that yet. I have a bunch of replicas of the Batmobile over the ages and I think conjuring up a car which looks classic yet modern will be one of the tougher challenges. Luckily, he will have more than one so I don’t have to be limited in going with just once choice [laughs].

NRAMA: Just to clarify - how many issues will your story be?

JL: I’m signed on for as many as Frank wants to do. Six is the minimum commitment. Seeing how stories can sometimes grow in the telling, I think it would be premature to say exactly how long the story will run.

NRAMA: Does the story have a title yet?

JL: For what’s probably going to see print on the issues, you’d have to ask Frank. But for me, it’s Batman and Robin: Hell Yeah!
Frank Miller:All-Star Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder

Frank Miller Talks All-Star Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder
by Matt Brady

Easily one of the most anticipated comics of the year finally reaches stores next week: All-Star Batman & Robin The Boy Wonder by Frank Miller and Jim Lee. The first of DC’s “All Star” imprint (and featuring a trade dress and logo designed by Chip Kidd), the ongoing series takes the Batman story back to when Batman was young and relatively inexperienced…and taking on a sidekick named Robin.

We sat down for a conversation with Miller about the series, his views of Batman, Robin, and why he can’t stay away from this particular well.

Newsarama: Let’s start with the obvious question first – what brought you to this project? You’ve said that a lot of it had to do with Jim drawing it – was there much begging or groveling on his part?

Frank Miller: Oh no. Jim doesn’t need to beg or grovel. He’s kind of good at his job [laughs]. Actually, he and I had been talking about doing something together for a long time, and this just felt like the right project. When it was offered by [All-Star imprint editor] Bob Schreck and [DC Executive Editor] Dan DiDio, it just seemed like a natural for the two of us. When I heard Jim was on for sure, that got me on as well. I love the subject, too – Batman is a character I just seem to have to revisit every few years.

I also wanted to do something with Dick Grayson that was a lot different than the bland version that was around at the beginning, or the version that cast him as a quasi-Batman. I wanted Dick to be his own kid. Also, I love the idea of making him even younger than he was before.

NRAMA: How old is he in this story?

FM: He’s only 12 years old. I tell you he’s 12 in almost every third caption, so there’s no doubt.

NRAMA: What is it about Batman that, as you said, draws you back to revisit him every few years? At this point in your career, and with no offense meant to any work you’re planning, I think you could probably say, “I’ve said enough with Batman” and no one would argue with you. What keeps you coming back?

FM: I like him. There are certain characters that just talk to you. I regard Batman as unusual in that I really don’t believe in any single interpretation of him as being carved in stone. I see Batman as a piece of folklore – a huge jewel that you can throw against any wall, and it won’t break, but will show you another way of looking at him. There are at the very least, a dozen different ways to do Batman, and they all work. Everything from Neal Adams/Denny O’Neil to Adam West to Dark Knight – the character is so resilient that he can be interpreted any which way…and work. I, for instance, love Dick Sprang and Jerry Robinson’s depiction, and base a lot of the ways I draw the character on their view of him.

NRAMA: The broad-bodied and barrel-chested guy with short ears on his costume…

FM: Right – if I want to draw a skinny guy, I’ll draw Daredevil.

NRAMA: Going back to the start of this project, how was this pitched to you? Did they say they wanted Batman, or Batman and Robin, or just see what you wanted to do?

FM: They specifically wanted to do Batman and Robin. My first condition was that it would be called Batman and Robin The Boy Wonder. I immediately knew that Robin was going to be the subject of the story. That way, we could play Batman a bit more of the archetype and the stern father, and Robin as the young warrior, learning his way.

NRAMA: That said, your Batman that you’ve shown in previous stories is, if anything, eminently practical, to the point of being methodical and emotionless in his ways. Why in the world would he bring a child into this world of his?

FM: I felt that somebody finally had to explain that, and I worked hard on it.

NRAMA: But still, it does seem to go against his view of protecting innocents, as well as innocence…

FM: No, it makes perfect sense when you think about it. He explains it to Alfred in the story, saying, “I’m a young man, but I won’t always be young, and the mission has to continue.” Robin is his apprentice. He’s training his replacement. That’s the life he intends for Robin.

Of course Alfred’s reaction is, “I’m dyspeptic!” and is horrified that Bruce would do such a thing, and even, if he did something like that, admit it out loud. Alfred already has to deal with this nutcase as a boss, and now he has to worry about a kid as well.

NRAMA: The apprentice approach does seem to go towards the ideas that “Batman would never put a child in danger.” Is it that, he would, if that child is his apprentice?

FM: Well, he didn’t want to get Dick Grayson at this age. It was the murder of his parents that forced his hand. Bruce was going to wait, as he puts it, “Until the kid was old enough to shave.”

NRAMA: So Bruce wasn’t going out, shopping for a12 year-old?

FM: No, but he’d been watching Dick Grayson because he was the most talented kid he’d seen yet. He was planning on taking him under his wing in maybe another six years, but instead, he has to do it when the kid is still too young for the job.

NRAMA: How does that play in the story? It seems that would affect the dynamic that Bruce was planning to have when training his apprentice…

FM: it is important in the series. My Robin is snotty. The two do not get along for a long time. There’s always banter back and forth, where Robin thinks that a lot of the stuff Batman does is old fashioned and weird, and kind of odd – and this is Batman, who is all of 24 or 25. But when you’re 12, a 24 or 25 year old is Methuselah.

NRAMA: Speaking of the whole setting in time, you’ve said that this is, at least, unofficially, “Batman: Year Two” for you…

FM: That’s the way I’m thinking of it, the title is definitely Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder. I love having my name on something called that. I always loved the “Boy Wonder” line, before he was turned into the Teen Wonder, and almost a “Grim Robin.” But I just love the idea of a young Robin. That’s why I created Carrie Kelly in Dark Knight - I just loved the contrast between this stocky, tough, dark adult, and a colorful little pixie running around.

Also – if you’re older than 12, are you going to come up wit that costume?

NRAMA: So Robin chose the outfit?

FM: Do you think Bruce would?

NRAMA: Now that you mention it, not really.

FM: Robin creates “Robin,” essentially.

NRAMA: How much so in that regard? Does Bruce even give him the name, or is all of this Dick’s creation?

FM: It’s Dick’s. Bruce hadn’t thought this thing through enough, given that he was somewhat “forced” to take Robin in before he – both Bruce, and Dick – were ready. Bruce is clearly winging it. This is a young Batman who’s trying to figure out what he’s doing. He’s got all the cool toys – he’s got the Batmobile, and is building the cave, but he’s this bachelor. He can solve any murder you want him to, disguise himself as anyone in the world, but handling a kid? That’s kind of outside his purview – somewhere outside of what he trained himself for. So he’s struggling with the whole thing, and it comes down to Robin to pick the identity that he has. I don’t want to reveal it, but it’s pretty cool, the reason he’s called “Robin.” I worked on it for a while, and I don’t want to reveal it now, but I’m pretty happy with it.

NRAMA: What is the effect of bringing Dick in under his wing at this point in time in his career as Batman? Is it the classic, “He humanizes Bruce/Batman?”

FM: I’m playing that as it goes. They’re talking to each other right now. I’ve plotted a lot of this story, but I’m letting these characters talk a lot, back and forth, and they’re defining each other for me. I’m letting them run with the ball right now.

NRAMA: Speaking of Bruce again, in your previous work with him he’s shown different leanings at his different ages in regards to justice, politics, and social issues. He’s not his Dark Knight persona yet, but where do you see him on his continuum?

FM: He’s a man with a mission, He believes that he has, in his own words, in a “holy war,” and is out to save the city. I was very pleasantly surprised to see it phrased the same way in Batman Begins. Batman feels that his mission is to save the city, but yeah, he’s far more idealistic at this point than the beat up Dark Knight we seen in a few decades’ time.

NRAMA: So he still believes the city can be saved at this point?

FM: Yes.

NRAMA: That is idealistic.

FM: One of his key lines is him saying, “Gotham needs me.”

NRAMA: Along those lines, does Batman ever turn, in your eyes? Does he ever realize that the city can’t be saved, and at very best, he can maybe hold it at the brink of chaos, or does that idealism stay with him, even to his dying breath?

FM: If you look at DKII, there’s clearly a lot of idealism there because he was the only one who thought that they could beat the bad guys. Everybody else either fled or became subservient. Idealism doesn’t mean that you can’t be cynical about certain things. For instance, if someone wants me to play Three Card Monte in my neighborhood, I am cynical when I look at them, because I know that’s a scam. But that doesn’t mean I’m cynical about life.

NRAMA: Pulling back from the story and character, let’s talk about your artist on the series…

FM: Yes, please.

NRAMA: How does that work? You’re an artist, he’s an artist, both of you are writers. Is this strictly a writer/artist relationship, or is there more give and take between the two of you?

FM: It’s a lot like it was with David Mazzucchelli. Jim and I don’t talk all that often – we talk now and then; we’re on good terms and everything. But I write a script with panel descriptions and everything in it. My panel descriptions have always been briefer than say, Alan Moore’s…

NRAMA: I think God’s are briefer than Alan Moore’s…

FM: [laughs] Probably. But it’s a difference in style for me. We’re both artists, we’re both writers, but in this project, I am the writer, he’s the artist, and we’re respecting each other’s disciplines. I’ll throw an image at him, but he’ll turn it right around, because we’re very different artists. That’s the pleasure of working with him.

He’s throwing me a lot of curveballs, but they’re all true to the story. It’s wonderful.

NRAMA: Knowing Jim’s strengths, do you find yourself putting things into the script thinking, “Jim’s going to knock this character/panel/image out of the park…”?

FM: Whenever I’m working with another artist, I try to play to them. For instance, when I’m working with Bill Sienkiewicz, he has wonderful powers of being evocative in his art, and he’s also wildly experimental when he wants to be, so I’ll play to that. Working with Dave Gibbons or David Mazzucchelli, I quick realized that these are two artists who are able to make anything believable, so I could make the material more and more complex – or, in the case of working with Dave on Martha Washington, more and more preposterous. He would continue to convince readers that it was true.

With Jim, he has a fine sense of drama, he draws beautifully, and there are certain things that he clearly has proclivity towards – one of them is spectacle, so I’m probably going to be driving him mad with some of the shots I’m calling for. So far, he’s up for it and doing great though.

NRAMA: Tell me a little about the “All Star” setting that this series is in as it’s been described to you. Is it a clean slate type of thing for you to populate as you see fit, or are there established rules of who’s where, when this is set in the larger picture, etc?

FM: If there are rules, no one has told them to me. They wanted me to cut loose with Batman and Robin. I mean, they didn’t want me to turn them into characters they wouldn’t be, but nobody’s every really told this story, as far as I know. I’m taking my time with it, in that it’s a very detailed origin story of Robin. I’m going to be using a lot of DC characters in it. Especially since I’m working with Jim Lee, I’ll be using a lot of the girls…

NRAMA: Are you talking about Batman’s supporting cast, or other heroes, or…

FM: Characters from all over the DC Universe. How am I going to do a Batman comic and not have Jim draw Black Canary? Please.

NRAMA: Knowing you and Jim, I figured Black Canary or a fishnet-era Zatanna would have to be in there somewhere…

FM: [laughs]

NRAMA: Any other names you can drop? After all, it seems that once you start talking about Batman, Superman crops up somewhere along the line…

FM: Oh yeah. I’ve already started writing that part of it. Superman is in it, Lois and Clark are in it. Vicki Vale has a very big part in it as well. I want to reintroduce Batgirl, the original one, and of course, Gordon will be in it. There will probably be an appearance by Wonder Woman as well….and Catwoman, who’s another “must-have” character when you’re talking about Batman.

NRAMA: And Catwoman will be Selina in pretty much the same characterization as she was in Year One?

FM: That’s what I’m planning, yeah. It’s a year later from when she and Bruce first met. Selina though, is as cranky as ever. I love Ed Brubaker’s take on her, don’t get me wrong – he’s done wonderful stuff with her, but my Selina in this story is more of a supporting character while his was a lead character. Ed’s is, as you’ll see, a little more likable than mine in this story. I’m also treating Catwoman as a villain. She hasn’t been a villain in Batman’s world for a long time. She’s a thief. She may be a very sexy thief, but she’s still a thief.

NRAMA: Especially with Jim drawing her…

FM: No, he doesn’t do bad work when it comes to Catwoman.

Also, I’ve got a part for Jimmy Olsen in this too.

NRAMA: Given that you’ve written the later chapters of Batman’s life with Dark Knight, and you’ve written Year One, and this is the unofficial “Year Two,” do you ever entertain fantasies of saying, “F___ it, I’m going to write my Batman from his start to his end. DC, give me ten years, and let me go nuts”?

FM: That kind of fantasy flits through the mind every now and then, but essentially, I write stories when I really have a story I want to tell. I wouldn’t have taken this on if I hadn’t sat down, thought about what they were offering in terms of creative freedom, setting, and everything else. After looking at it all, I realized I had a story here. It does relate to my other stories, but I like the fact that yeah, I’ve done the other bookend, but to show Batman, and more to the point, Dick Grayson becoming a hero…when we first see him, he’s a frightened, traumatized little boy. This is the story I want to tell now.

NRAMA: Traditionally, Robin’s origin and early years have been touched by villains and the costumed freaks of Batman’s world, from Boss Zucco in his 1940 origin to Joker and Two-Face more recently. Are you going to be playing with those themes as well?

FM: Oh yes. I’ve got plans for several of his villains, and they do relate to the overall storyline. It’s not awfully directly, but it is important.

NRAMA: Are you taking the same approach with them that you are with, say, the relationship with Batman and Robin, and making them more logical, at least to you? For instance, getting splashed in the face with acid and going crazy maybe needs a second look?

FM: [laughs] Actually, I find the most terrifying character circling around Batman remains the Joker, and I can’t keep may hands off of him. As I see it, there shouldn’t be anything funny about him. His name should be irony.

NRAMA: What is it with the Joker and you? Is it similar to your attraction to Batman in that you can always find a new facet to him?

FM: The thing is, the Joker is a sociopath and psychopath, but I would rather play up his evilness rather than his craziness. The Joker that I’ve always tried to portray, and now I get a chance to do it when he’s young – he’s satanic. He’s not laughing all the time.

There will be other characters that come climbing into the series as well. I haven’t been on a monthly gig for a long time, and I’ve forgotten how much fun it is. Things just start happening. The pages start coming in, and I see that Jim draws a female character really well, so I want to use her more than I planned. Many things like that happen across the course of the run. It’s almost like doing live theater – you get a feeling of what’s working and what’s not very quickly. It’s one of the really joys of working monthly.

NRAMA: Speaking to that, as you and Jim are looking at it, this is still pretty much open-ended?

FM: The last we talked, I told him that we were sailing past the originally projected six issues, and no one seems to mind. He’s on, I’m on, and we’re going to take this as long as we can. This is back like when we were doing Born Again in Daredevil – we had no idea how many issues it was going to be. It was originally supposed to be four, and then ended up being more than 200 pages long.

One thing you can always count on me for is that I always underestimate the number of pages that I’m going to eat up with my stories.

NRAMA: One could argue that for your fans, that’s not a bad thing.

FM: It is for me and a publisher if it was originally concieved as a 48-page book…[laughs]

NRAMA: Along those lines – how are you fitting this into your schedule? Do you set aside discreet periods where, say, you’re working on Sin City 2, and then stop and do Batman, or does it all just flow as it flows?

FM: I find that the more you do, the more you do. Throw yourself completely into whatever story you’re doing, whatever art job you’re doing. When you do that, you find the time. Maybe you don’t have as much leisure time, but I find that if I love what I’m doing, I never feel overworked. I love doing this stuff, and am thoroughly enjoying the collaboration with Jim, and there are a couple of other artists that I’m talking with about working on some stuff, and I’ve got a big art project I’m working on, and yeah, Sin City 2 is on the horizon, so I’m working on some new material for that. But it doesn’t feel burdensome at all.

I mean, I can’t complain if too much work that I love is the worst of my problems.

NRAMA: Lastly, is this the only Batman for the foreseeable future? At one point, you were working on a Batman/terrorist story…

FM: I’m 120 pages into the inks on that, and am working on it concurrently. That will probably be a single piece, somewhere around 150-200 pages long.

If Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder is “Batman Year Two” this is “Batman Year 1 and ½.” It’s quite a young Batman.

NRAMA: Sounds like you’ve got multiple Batman pots simmering on your stove, and you like it that way…

FM: Oh yeah – but there will be more Sin City, there’s a whole new series I’m planning, and life goes on.
Batman Begins Soundtrack

This soundtrack is not an enormous crowd pleaser like Elfmans soundtrack. Very much of this sounds eerie, introspective, atmospheric, horrific and mournful. I didn't warm to it immediately, but after the 3rd turn it's beginning to grow on me. Those expecting the frenetic bombast of the Elfman theme will be disappointed. There is no strong central theme here although there are themes. Instead this soundtrack weaves a world around you, like listening to Bruce Wayne thinking dark thoughts inside a bat cave. Like the eye of a hurricane, building himself up until...BAM!..by the 10th track he is fully in motion, this track sounds...relentless. Like a big flapping bat whose got his fangs in your neck and will not let go.

I admit, I like the Elfman soundtrack better, simply because it's got better developed themes and it's much more fanciful/fantasy driven. But if you want to brood with Bruce inside his busted up psyche, it's worth a listen.

The fight scenes were intense, the car chase was fast and furious, the character development was amazing, the surprises were somewhat expected but still great

AWESOMENESS HAS A NEW NAME (and for once it is not Killer Croc) IT IS BATMAN BEGINS and I cannot wait for the second one (which they have already alluded to)

Who would you like to see in any future Batman Movies? Except for Christian Bale, of course!
And then differentiate whether you would see them after 'Batman & Robin' or 'Batman Begins' or even in 'Batman Beyond'.

I can't see anybody I know as Batman at the moment. I think the person in my vision of a future Batman is not even born yet.

Any ideas?

You traveled the world... Now you must journey inwards... to what you really fear... it's inside you... there is no turning back. Your parents' death was not your fault. Your training is nothing. The will is everything. If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal, you become something else entirely. Are you ready to begin?

I was watching my Vol 1 DVD set of the animated series and came across this hilarious scene.

Batman crashes through a window of an apartment. The woman sitting on the chair is in a bathrobe and recoils, screaming, "oh my!". But then Batman gets up and she says more lustfully while leaning forward, "oh my"... Batman is about to leave through the door, but looks back at her and has a coy little smile...

I lost it!!! I was laughing so hard! just 'cause I know, if Batman came crashing through my window - he could come back anytime!!! hahahaha

after much deliberation though i've decided that my favourite is Harley quinn - f***** love her!

thank you Cato for reminding!!

I saw him a couple years ago in his one-man show about George Burns -- he was AMAZING in it -- during curtain call he took off his glasses and came out of character and my friend said, "Oh, NOW he's Frank Gorshin!" So talented, and an amazing mimic -- RIP, Da Riddler.

This is an incredible short film (preview really) I figure most of you have seen it already, but if you haven't, lord almighty, watch it right now! It's set in the future, after Dick Grayson has hung up the cape to raise a family. But when Batman is killed he falls back into his old shoes. Absolute must see.

So. . . the Batman movie. . .

Yeah. . . so I had a theory, and then I read an article talking to Christopher Nolan and he was sayin' that The movie was gonna have a lot of twist and turns. . . .

Anyway, so Katie Holmes is the Assistant D.A. in the movie. Also supposedly Batmans love interest. And now I'm guessin' she'll have another role.

I say she'll turn out to be Ra's Ah Ghul's daughter, Talia. I think that's her name. . . my brain escapes me for the moment.

Anyway, I'm betting on that.

I've liked OMAC so far. And the brief takes, and mentions on what happened in the regular books. Thoughts anyone?

BTW-Does anyone happen to know where I can find a decent DVD of the 1943 Batman serial?
